Our Story

Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) acknowledges the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit who have lived in and cared for these lands for generations. We are grateful for the traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders who are still with us today and those who have gone before us. ASBA recognizes that what we call Alberta is the traditional and ancestral territory for the Blackfoot Confederacy (Kainai, Piikani and Siksika), the Cree, Dene, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stoney Nakoda, Tsuu T’ina Nations and the Métis People of Alberta. This acknowledgement respects Treaties 6, 7 and 8, Métis Settlements and the Six Regions of the Métis Nation of Alberta.

Alberta School Boards Association is the provincial association supporting Alberta’s 61 locally elected public, separate and francophone member school boards who support the diverse needs of all students in urban, metro, and rural communities.

In Alberta, citizens elect school board trustees during municipal elections held every four years with the most recent occurring on October 18, 2021. School boards consult with local constituents and make decisions in the best interests of the students and communities they serve, while being mindful that the dollars allocated to public education come from all Albertans.

School boards are advocates for Alberta’s children

School boards make a difference

ASBA builds the capacity of member boards and individual trustees ranging from advice and training in leadership, professional development, governance and advocacy. As a province-wide association, ASBA brings the different voices of member boards together, administering a balanced viewpoint and advocating on behalf of all our members to government and other stakeholders.

The result is unparalleled diversity and choice for Alberta families. It’s something we’ve been doing for over 115 years.

In Memoriam

This past year, many of us grieved the loss of current and former trustees, and others in the education community. They were our friends, co-workers and mentors. We remember their contributions to education in Alberta and commemorate all that they meant to us.

ASBA’s 2020-2023 Strategic Plan guides our work, including the following priorities:

1. To empower school boards to govern in support of the diverse educational needs of all students.

  • Customizable services are accessible to all school boards to adapt to their local needs.
  • Quality services are developed.

2. To promote the value and credibility of member boards and the ASBA.

  • Increased awareness and profile of locally elected Boards and the Association.

3. To have influence in all decisions related to education in Alberta.

  • Locally elected school boards and ASBA will be the identified leaders on all educational matters.
  • Strong relationships are maintained with all stakeholders.

4. To operate in a fiscally sound manner.

  • Culture of transparency is promoted.
  • Financial information will continue to be made available to members.
